When RenĂ©e Elise Goldsberry auditioned for the role of Angelica Schuyler, Miranda, Tommy Kail, and Oskar Eustis (artistic director of the Public Theater, which produced the Off-Broadway premiere) were amazed by her speed, âas if lightning had flashed through the roomâ (78). Eustis attributed this ability to her experience performing Shakespeare in multiple seasons of the Publicâs Shakespeare in the Park series. Goldsberry was initially reluctant to take on any project. However, the casting agents persisted, and after listening to a demo of âSatisfied,â Goldsberry wanted the part. âSatisfiedâ retells the ball from Angelicaâs point of view, commenting on the subjective nature of history narratives. Goldsberry thought she had no chance at the role, but her performance of the song, including a rapid-fire rap, left them stunned again. Later, after Hamilton opened, Miranda tweeted, âI want to fast forward to when high schools do Hamilton & the girl playing Angelica Schuyler gets to spit the HARDEST BARS IN THE SHOWâ (79).
At Hamilton and Elizaâs wedding, Angelica, gives a toast. Then the scene rewinds to replay the winter ball from Angelicaâs perspective. Angelica admits that she will always regret that night.
